Preparing to reduce cancer in Six Nations

04/15/13 - Alethea Kewayosh is in the midst of preparing an Aboriginal Cancer Strategy II and wanted to meet with Six Nations Elected Council to explain why this strategy is important. She also announced that a process will start and include forwarding strategic priorities and implementing the strategy with help through relationships, progress and next steps. Chief William Montour wanted to see an Indian registry list comparison as soon as possible. Too many are ill with cancer, he noted.
Cancer Care Ontario’s goal is based on improving a patient’s journey as they seek treatment or palliative care. Ms Kewayosh, Director Aboriginal Cancer Control Unit, told Council members at the April 3 Human Services Committee that more cancers are showing up. In the case of potential health issues, she advised smokers to break away from smoking and to join focus groups to withdraw from it. She encouraged people to seek early cancer screening for lung, breast, pancreas, cervical and colorectal cancers. Men working with steel have a potential to develop prostate cancer.
In her presentation, Ms Kewayosh wanted to identify support people in the Six Nations community including Health Services employees and local groups. Through education, awareness and treatment, most cancers are survivable. A joint plan is in the works for the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Presently Lee Styres-Loft is the patient navigator and provides other health professionals with cultural sensitivity training.
In general, the path will include productive relationships, updating communities, seeking recognition by Ontario, acquiring approvals and ensuring continued engagement. Six Nations could map out their own services in this area and in Hagersville and Brantford.
