Basic oral hygiene includes brushing the teeth regularly 2 times each day, flossing once a day and visiting your dentist and dental hygienist every 6 months for a checkup and a cleaning.
If teeth are not brushed often or well enough, plaque builds up at the gum line. Plaque causes cavities, bad breath and gums that become red, inflamed and bleed when brushing. It is important that the gum line area of the teeth be cleaned well but not scrubbed.
A soft bristled toothbrush is recommended using a rolling motion at the gum line. Studies show that electric brushes will help to clean the gum line area better than manual tooth brushes.

In addition to brushing and flossing, it is also important that foods high in sugar be kept to a minimum. Some examples include: kool-aid, iced tea, pop, candy, gum and cookies. Instead these foods should be replaced with choices from the 4 basic food groups, more fruits, vegetables, real fruit juices, water, mild, cheese and yogurt are recommended to prevent decay.
So remember for a healthy smile be sure to brush twice a day floss once a day and visit your dentist and dental hygienist every 6 months.
